Artists deserve compensation on every sale of their work

Not just the first one. Support artists + live with great art. A win-win scenario.

Peggy pays artist royalties through the app

What are royalties?

Royalties are a percentage that is paid to the original creator on all future sales—allowing them to continuously benefit from their hard work. The art world doesn’t have a fair mechanism that enforces royalties, so it’s up to us to implement a better system. Royalties are a staple of creative industries—authors, filmmakers, and musicians all receive residual payments for their work. Artists don't.

The Problem

Due to the success of many emerging artists, a work might be sold for 10x the price it was bought for—meaning that the artist doesn’t receive any financial compensation for their success. At Peggy, we don’t think that’s right. And we have a plan.

Sold for $800k, none of which went to the artist

Amoako Boafa experienced a meteoric rise in the art world—his gestural portraits which were originally sold for $10,000, were sold at auction for $800,000+ only a few years later. Boafa didn’t get any compensation from these sales and the owner of the paintings became anonymous. This treats art like a stock to be flipped, with no regard for the person who created it.

We ensure that royalties are paid globally—every time

Outside of the UK and the European Union, artists are not paid royalties. Peggy does better. We offer 10% royalties (5% to artists, 5% to the gallery) on every secondary sale, plus the transparency of knowing who owns an artwork.

“The reason why Artist’s Resale Right is something I really value is because it puts me back in contact with pieces of work.”

“How could you pay $10,000 for an artist’s work at the beginning and, at some point, it’s worth $30 million, and they or their family see nothing of that increase?”

“We need legislation to enact the right to royalties, and we need to align it with what goes on in Britain and the E.U.”

Pay artists what they deserve, grow the art market

Your support allows artists to continue making meaningful work. Using patent-pending digital fingerprinting technology, royalties are automatically sent to artists and galleries when an artwork is sold on the secondary market. The more people who choose to prioritize artist royalties, the better the art world will become.
